Top Tips To Save Fuel

With fuel prices continuing to soar, drivers are not only looking for the most economic vehicle in a particular class but they are looking for more fuel efficient ways to drive their car. There are some basic tips that you can benefit from if you wish to save a little extra petrol or diesel whenever you get behind the wheel of your car. Drive slower and smoother, choose the right gear, and consider ECU remapping for the greatest gains.

Watch Your Speed

Driving quickly tends to consume more fuel than driving slower. Even a small reduction in speed can lead to a noticeable reduction in the amount of fuel that you consume and money that you spend. If you have cruise control or speed limiting cruise control then you can use its settings to help you reduce your speed and therefore reduce the fuel that you use when driving.

Use The Right Gear

Having your car in too low or too high a gear will have a significant impact on your fuel consumption so make sure that you are in the right gear. Some modern cars tell you which gear you should be in when you have the cruise control set but even if you don’t have this feature then you should, at the very least, ensure that the car isn’t struggling in too low a gear or whining in too high a gear.

Drive Smoothly

Accelerating and braking consume the most fuel along with changing gears. This means that constantly adjusting your speed as you journey will be costing you a lot of fuel. Try to maintain as steady a speed as possible without excessive braking or acceleration to help reduce the amount of fuel you have to use to get you anywhere.

ECU Remapping

Most cars utilise a stock map for their engine management system or ECU and this map is used in thousands of cars being driven in different circumstances and by different styles of driver. ECU remapping can provide you with smoother acceleration and the increase in power means that you can greatly reduce your fuel consumption without changing the way you drive your car.
